In the warm night air of Aunt Abby’s backyard, surrounded by a chorus of cicadas, Percy and Cal pitched their tents.

Actually, Cal pitched the tent while Percy hauled Hannah’s blankets and toys that she wanted with her for the night.

One step onto the back porch and her green plastic flashlight stopped working. “That’s what happens if you keep turning it off and on,” Ellie said.

Hannah’s bottom lip wobbled. “But we need it against the ghosts.”

Percy steered her into her tent and sat her on the sleeping bag next to her sister and teddies. “Play with your things. I’ll fix this.”

He couldn’t fix it.

Changing the batteries did nothing. Hunting for another flashlight, he scavenged through the boxes of his aunt’s belongings in the attic. Nothing there, either.

A bit of a pickle, then. He traipsed back to the yard, banging the end of Hannah’s flashlight against his thigh as if it might miraculously turn on. He passed Ellie and Hannah’s tent next to the washing line and made for the back fence. Against the wrought-iron picnic table, he leaned and watched Cal under a canopy of magnolias hammering a stake into the soft ground.

“Hannah’s flashlight is busted.”

“They’re a dime a dozen at Target.”

Percy tucked the flashlight under his arm and felt for his keys. “I’ll be back in twenty then.”

Cal lifted a brow. “I didn’t mean for you to get another one.”

“It’s that or tears. I don’t do tears.”

“Things might be easier if you did.”

Percy paused, clenching the plastic flashlight. Cal set down the hammer and crossed to him. “If you insist on making the trip to Target, bring back some snacks.” He fished out a debit card from his pocket. “Use this, the PIN is—”

Percy clamped a hand over Cal’s mouth, and a surprised burst of breath warmed his palm. “You’re going to tell me your PIN?”

Cal hummed, and the tickle shot right to Percy’s groin. Whip-fast, he pulled back his hand.

“I’ll tell you if you let me.”

“Giving your PIN away is careless.”

Cal slanted an exasperated look at him. “When am I ever careless?” He proceeded to tell him his PIN.

“I could take off with all your money now.”

“I wouldn’t care about the money.”

Percy clutched the card so hard the sides cut into his skin. He sounded breathless when he spoke. “What do you want to eat?”

“Anything you like.”
